The ACLU of Texas seeks a passionate and experienced leader for the role of Director of Finance and Administration, taking responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of sound fiscal procedures and practices essential to the smooth operation of an organization with an operating budget of $5 million+; and for overseeing the administrative functions of the organization. In addition, the Director of Finance and Administration manages the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the compensation plan, including benefits, and exercises authority over employment compliance matters.
Design, implement, and maintain financial management systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles to guide the current and projected operations of the organization, including financial models for projected growth;
Manage the organization’s accounting process, including producing and analyzing monthly income and expense reports;
Produce quarterly financial statements and present them to the Board of Directors at quarterly Board meetings;
Monitor the overall financial performance of the organization;
Serve as primary staff liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors;
Prepare an annual budget in conjunction with the Deputy Executive Director, Department Directors, and Executive Director;
Prepare long-range financial and cash flow projections;
Oversee the annual audit and quarterly tax reporting and serve as primary liaison with the independent auditors;
Maintain the organization’s professional and liability insurance;
Manage outside contracts with vendors, including IT support;
Work with Deputy Director to manage compliance with multiple restricted grants;
Work with the Director of Development to track and report revenue;
Work with National ACLU finance department on reporting and reconciling shared revenue and to implement organizational best practices as they relate to finance and apply to the affiliate;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Maintain knowledge of employment legislation and ensure organization's compliance;
Maintain responsibility for organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local legislation about all personnel matters;
Communicate changes in the organization's personnel policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed;
Assist executive management in the annual review, preparation, and administration of the organization's wage and salary program;
Recommends, evaluates, and participates in staff development;
Performs other duties as assigned.
The Director of Finance and Administration must have a strong understanding of and passion for the ACLU mission, and be conversant about the ACLU’s work across the many issue areas of civil liberties and civil rights, particularly identified strategic priority issues. The Director of Finance and Administration will have the ability to take the initiative, problem-solve, multi-task, and work independently as well as collaborate with others as a part of a team in a collaborative environment. The Director of Finance and Administration must have extraordinary leadership skills with the following qualifications:
BS/BA degree and training or experience in accounting and financial management;
Two years of HR experience to manage the overall administration of the human resource function;
Prior experience with nonprofit accounting and have demonstrated a working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
Three years’ experience as a senior financial manager or Director of Finance for an organization with a comparable operating budget;
Experience using Abila MIP accounting software program;
Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, including a strong attention to detail;
Experience managing contract IT support a plus;
Prior experience managing several projects at various stages of completion;
Prior experience working with volunteers, staff, and Board members;
Prior work experience that demonstrates a confident and professional work style and ability to work creatively and independently;
Occasional travel and flexible work schedule required;
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience and within the parameters of ACLU of Texas’s salary scale and competitive with organizations of similar scope and budget.
