Reporting to the chief financial officer (CFO), the NCOBS Controller is responsible for the oversight of all accounting operations of the school. The controller will manage day-to-day operations including functional oversight of accounting department, accounts payable, financial reporting, expense analysis, cash control and endowment fund management. This position will assist the CFO to ensure that North Carolina Outward Bound School develops and implements policies and procedures to support financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The controller will work closely with our department managers and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage all accounting and bookkeeping responsibilities and personnel. This includes oversight of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
Manage all accounting reports including design, maintenance and analysis of general ledger using Financial Edge. Ensure timely report distribution including month-end journal entries and monthly reconciliations.
Manage expense analysis and control. Ensure internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and actual expenditures.
Ensure accounts payable, bank reconciliations and debt payments are timely and accurate.
Maintain an orderly accounting filing system.
Manage and coordinate the provision of information to external?auditors?for the annual audit.
Manage all bank deposits.
Assists in the production of the annual budget and forecasts.
Manage endowment funds and required endowment financial reporting.
Prepares quarterly?sales tax returns. Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filing.
Support the CFO in engaging board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
Completes other projects as assigned by the CFO.
Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
Demonstrate knowledge and passion about NCOBS & Outward Bound programs, history, and philosophy.
Minimum of 5-years of non-profit accounting experience and a Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States.
Ability to manage others and ensure strong team environment.
Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers; assuring and promoting a positive and supportive work environment.
Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
Represent the organization appropriately and professionally.
Familiar with working on a computer, databases and be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word & Excel) and accounting databases.
Personal qualities of integrity and credibility.
Be able to clear all background and motor vehicle screening.
