The Senior Accountant is part of the finance team, a group of dedicated individuals who combine diligent work with camaraderie and passion for the Foundation’s mission. The accounting team is jointly responsible for accounting for over 1000 funds, 120 investment managers, and a full complement of internal departments. The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller of The San Francisco Foundation.
The Senior Accountant is a key contributor to the team efforts to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the Foundation’s financial records, timely reporting and analysis of financial results, and maintenance of strong internal controls. This will be accomplished through individual work, contribution to Foundation-wide projects, and back up for other Finance staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Controller in drafting year-end financial statements, including footnotes, as part of the year-end financial statement audit. Prepare assigned audit schedules requested by auditors for interim and year-end audit.
Assist Controller in preparation of schedules and reports for annual Federal and state tax filings.
Document accounting processes via written scripts, updating as necessary, and make recommendations for improved procedures and controls.
Assist Controller in selecting and implementing new financial fund accounting system.
Account for investments including recording all investment earnings and fees, reconciling to external manager reports, and timely allocation to the donor and administrative funds on monthly basis.
Prepare monthly analyses of fees earned on donor and project funds.
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations including follow-up on reconciling items and stale-dated checks.
Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts on a timely basis. Coordinate with other finance staff members to ensure all monthly general ledger activity has been processed timely and reconciled.
Review and post recurring journal entries.
Other duties as assigned.
Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance required, along with a minimum of 6 years directly related experience, including assisting in the preparation of tax returns. CPA or MBA a plus.
Requires in-depth knowledge of general accounting principles, reconciliations, and documentation techniques. Must have the ability to manage, analyze, and summarize large amounts of data. Strong Excel skills are required.
The candidate will also have excellent oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail is a must. The ability to work in a team-oriented office environment is required. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and across departments. Experience within a non-profit or philanthropic organization is a plus. The ideal employee will be a self-starter with the skills to work independently with minimal supervision and be able to accurately manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Experience with computerized fund accounting systems, in particular, Blackbaud’s Financial Edge and Raisers Edge products a plus. Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Microsoft 365. Experience implementing new financial fund accounting systems a plus.
