The Executive Director, Enterprise Accounting & Division Controller is a critical leadership position that oversees the strategy and execution of all major accounting functions for Cox Communications. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Finance & Accounting and serves as a strategic partner by engaging with business leaders within the Company to anticipate business issues and drive strong decision making through sound financial management and application of accounting expertise.
The ED/Division Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the Company encompassing financial transaction processing, financial close, and accounting policy and procedures. This role is also responsible for the Company’s accounting compliance as well as the development, management, and effectiveness of our internal controls. Additionally, the ED/Division Controller is responsible for proactive engagement with leaders throughout the business to influence decisions and provide guidance regarding financial and accounting implications of business activities/decisions.
A focus on continuous improvement including the enhancement of accounting/finance processes, policies, and procedures is essential to success in this position. This includes partnering across the broader finance organization and with key business stakeholders to evolve the accounting as the business changes, optimize upstream and downstream processes, and integrate improvements into operating plans and goals. Ongoing organizational and individual development within the accounting organization is another critical success factor including the ability to lead, transform, and adapt the accounting organization to the Company’s shifting business model and strategies.
This role is accountable for:
Preparing accurate and timely financial statements for leaders to make proper decisions;
Aligning accounting and business operations to provide value-adding financial statement business insights;
Managing and maintaining internal controls governance over financial reporting and key business practices;
Consistently executive operationally efficient and effective transactional accounting processes.
Lead a centralized accounting organization with a staff of five directors and over 100 total employees and outsource partners across the General Ledger, Fixed Asset, Project Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Internal Controls Governance functions.
Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and consistency of the accounting for Cox Communications financial statements.
Create and sustain a culture of continuous improvement to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting operations.
Own the analysis and management of key performance indicators and service level agreements for Enterprise Accounting activities and proactively take actions to improve performance as appropriate.
Demonstrate a commitment to outstanding customer service to Cox Communications business operations.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
Develop, implement and monitor proper accounting and financial reporting internal controls as well as key operational management controls. Set Cox Communications accounting policies.
Provide GAAP guidance and support to the organization to ensure compliance.
Monitors and assesses current trends and emerging developments within the field and practice of accounting to ensure the Company’s compliance and preparedness.
Oversee external audit efforts including relationship between the accounting team and the external audit firm for preparation of the external audit.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field, MBA or MAcc preferred.
Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation (active license) preferred.
10+ years of progressive, broad-based accounting experience in public accounting and/or business with companies of similar size and complexity required.
10+ years of management and leadership experience at the director and/or executive levels developing an accounting/finance function in a changing business environment is preferred.
Advanced comprehension of accounting and business systems.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends and developments within the accounting field and corresponding impact on business operations.
Leadership and strategic management skills to develop, coach, and direct the performance of a team to achieve goals and objectives.
Proven leadership and teamwork skills fostering an inclusive, supportive environment by motivating and developing staff at all levels.
