Reporting to the Media Lab’s Director of Operations and Strategy, this position will manage a team that provides day-to-day financial services for a large, interdisciplinary research lab with current annual activities totaling over $80mm. Will manage the financial reporting, budgeting, planning, and forecasting processes for the lab and supervise a finance team of seven.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
-Lead the Lab’s financial planning process including annual budgets, multi-year forecasts and monthly monitoring.
-Oversee management of research revenues and expenditures in compliance with sponsor regulations and MIT policy.
-Responsibility for making all finance-related decisions on behalf of the Media Lab’s Director of Operations and Strategy when he is not available.
-Serve as a final escalation contact to the PIs in the Lab when financial advice or guidance is needed.
-Actively identify and evaluate trends, opportunities, and risks that impact the financial position of the Lab.
-Work closely with the Director of MAS on high level issues to ensure effectiveness of our team’s collaboration and processes.
-Develop materials for and deliver clear and effective presentations on the Lab’s financial position to internal audiences, including ML faculty, VPF, and the Dean’s Office.
-Apply a deep understanding of the Lab’s financial drivers, the MIT budgeting and accounting systems, and the external financial environment to enable the Director of Operations and Strategy and Lab Director to make financially sound business decisions.
-Work with the Lab’s Senior Business Analyst in developing key reports on the financial status of the Lab’s research groups.
-Recommend actions to streamline processes, improve operational efficiencies, and identify opportunities for reducing operational costs.
-Serve as primary liaison to MIT’s central financial groups and the Dean’s Office for the School of Architecture and Planning, including representing ML finance at SA+P’s AO meetings.
Requires Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a quantitative discipline, and a minimum of five years of financial management experience, including significant experience in an academic/research environment. Must have computer and quantitative expertise, including advanced Excel and financial reporting capabilities, along with strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Knowledge of SAP, KC, and Tableau strongly preferred. Candidate must have a solid history of supervising individuals and teams. Comfort and expertise in dealing with diverse academic and professional community also required.
