TreePeople seeks an entrepreneurial, strategic, passionate and experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive team to lead the organization’s financial and operation areas and be an indispensable voice in strategic planning efforts. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CFO will develop and define processes and implement infrastructure and systems needed to support substantial growth in the immediate future and beyond. The Chief Financial Officer presently oversees a financial assistant and a contracts manager and will be tasked with hiring and retaining additional team members in accordance with anticipated growth and the needs of the organization.
Since its founding in 1974, TreePeople has involved more than 3 million people in planting and caring for countless number of trees and native habitat. With now more than 60 employees, 7,000 volunteers and 100,000 social media followers, TreePeople is rapidly growing. The organization’s success is attributed to tremendous local and global demand for innovative solutions, thought leadership, and community organizing strategies around climate change, equity, urban forestry, environmental literacy, water-security and fire resilience. The potential for TreePeople’s impact on people and nature is limitless.
Between 2015 and 2018, TreePeople’s annual revenues have grown almost 37% from $4.6 million to $7.3 million, thanks to strategic investments in team leadership and the ongoing support from individuals, foundations, business and public agencies. TreePeople is on track to exceed its $8.2 million annual budget for FY2019.
TreePeople’s impact is far-reaching with equity, public health, community education and organizing, arboreal health and conservation serving as both the ends and the means of their activities and goals. TreePeople is addressing the most important 21st century issues, including addressing and ameliorating air and water pollution; reducing fire and flood risk; serving as a leader for climate change readiness and resilience; and reducing the region’s dependence on imported water. Driven by research, proven solutions, and deep knowledge of community mobilization, TreePeople is improving the health and wellness of many communities and inspiring, engaging and supporting millions of people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment.
The CFO will have at least 10 years of professional experience, including managing the finance and administration of a high-growth $5 to $10 million organization (preference given to nonprofit experience). The ideal candidate will have experience creating and driving the analytic framework for planning and managing organizational change in a highly entrepreneurial organization. Additionally, the CFO will have a bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, or finance; an MBA is preferred.
