The controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
The Controller position reports directly to CFO, and works closely with other key staff, including the executive team, all department heads, and the project management team.
Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate standards and regulatory requirements.
Rigorous monthly closing schedule management
Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the financial status of the companies.
Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
Coordinate all audit activity.
Tax Planning, Year End Financials, and Tax Returns
Manage cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with others; continuously collaborate with leadership to assess the financial efficacy of operations, and establish systems to support operations.
Manage and track the performance of assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
Report to ownership when necessary in writing and verbally
Assist with creation, refinement and implementation of accounting policies & procedures. (Primary responsible for documenting work flow, procedures and policies related to accounting)
Research technical accounting literature and write technical accounting memos.
Leveraging strengths of the current accounting team members, helping to clarify roles and responsibilities and developing and implementing programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals
Providing leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
Establishing and promoting core values of the department as well as company-wide values
Setting strategic direction and vision for the department that aligns with company-wide objectives
Setting of department goals and measuring of performance against goals
Managing the department’s interaction with the broader organization by representing the department in executive decision making, negotiating interdepartmental challenges, and communicating regularly back to team members relevant information regarding the company-at large and other departments.
Controlling expenses and human resources decisions for the department
Organizing workflows, establishing SOPs and assigning accountability
Manage ALL department team members by ensuring well-being, defining individual success, linking individual success to department and company success, securing necessary resources to allow individual success, and encouraging professional growth and well-being
Continuously improve the department’s capability
Responsible for difficult, high-risk or complex decisions required of the department, elevating when necessary
Manage accounting and reporting software integration and coordinate ongoing utilization and continuous learning with the IT department
Solve problems with an analytic approach to data interpretation rather than simply a reporting mindset.
Translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels of the organization including finance and non-finance managers.
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Accounting or Finance; MBA helpful
Eight or more years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CPA certification required; Big 4 experience is helpful
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment
Self-motivated, willing to take a hands-on role

Excellent organization and prioritization skills
