This position provides financial, accounting, and reporting support for WHYY’s operations. The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in month-end closing, financial variance analysis, and grant project management. He/she will actively interact with WHYY’s operation managers, grants fundraising team, and other internal and external stakeholders to monitor the progress of projects and ensuring that project revenues and expenses are accounted for and forecasted properly.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare schedules to support journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations, and financial statement analysis.
Research complex data to reconcile and explain financial data variances.
Work closely with project managers and grants fundraising team on budgets, modifications, and other financial aspects of grant management.
Create internal monthly detail reports and related variance analysis for review with project managers and other stakeholders.
Monitor grant expenditure burn-rates and report material variances to project managers in order to keep scheduled deliverables on track.
Review external grant financial reports in accordance with grant requirements, ensuring proper audit trail.
Monitor grant payments and assist with rolling accrual and cash forecast.
Assist project managers with timesheets, payment requests, and purchase orders to ensure proper coding and compliance on grant funded projects and timely invoice processing.
Collaborate with grants reporting team and other stakeholders to develop and maintain policies governing effective project accounting procedures
Train project managers and other stakeholders on relevant accounting systems, procedures, and policies as needed.
Assist with external audit and reporting as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration is required. CPA preferred.
Experience: 5-10 years of related experience; a strong foundational knowledge of grant and/or project management preferred.
Technical Skills: Excellent computer skills with proficiency using accounting software and proven ability to learn new software quickly, including budgeting programs.
Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience of collaboration with business partners in projects as Finance Subject Matter Expert preferred.
Math Skills: Must possess strong math skills plus an ability to perform complex calculations. Advanced knowledge of Excel is essential, including filtering and pivoting techniques for large data sets.
