Directs the overall financial and accounting practices of the University. Oversees treasury, accounting, budget, tax and audit activities. Oversees financial and accounting system controls and standards and ensures timely financial reports for management and Board of Trustees.
Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Administers day-to-day planning, management and maintenance of all financial functions and financial records including books of original entry, supporting schedules and subsidiary ledgers.
Establishes and maintains all university policies related to accounting matters and develops internal controls to safeguard the University’s assets and resources
Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures in all tasks and demonstrates ethical behavior in the conduct of all position responsibilities.
Oversees payroll, student billing and accounts payable and receivable.
Coordinates annual audit reports.
Collects and analyzes financial data to provide management with internal reports.
Provides for an annual budgeting and planning process that meets operational and strategic needs of the University while maintaining sufficient reserves.
Ensures effective use of resources to achieve the University’s mission.
Supports all levels in budget preparation through training and providing relevant information when appropriate.
Serves on university committees, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
Oversees the management of the University’s endowment portfolio.
Serves as ex officio staff support to the Finance and Audit and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees.
Provides special reporting and analysis of financial information to management and to the Board of Trustees, communicates any material deviations, and provides trend data on organizational revenues and expenditures, as well as forward-looking multi-year outlook.
Establishes procedures for reviewing and approving budget expenditure justifications and approvals.
Adheres to any reporting requirements by external entities such as federal and state governments, accrediting agencies, and bond authorities.
Provides strong leadership toward continuous improvement in a service-oriented environment.
Coordinates with and provides effective support to all units across the University.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Develops and maintains an effective unit through the selection, training, managing, compensation, motivation, and evaluation of all unit personnel.
Develops and maintains a program for sound employee relations with all business office employees.
Provides guidance and mentorship to business office employees to assist them in their professional development.
Administers the activities of the general accounting, collections and business planning areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individual must possess the knowledge and following skills and abilities or be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
Excellent Oral/written communication skills with a significant working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other business applications and financial software
Demonstrated skills in financial management, planning, and strategic analysis
Experience in strategic oversight and implementations of financial systems
Working knowledge of and the ability to implement best practices for accounting and business operations
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
Proven experience in leadership and management, with a high commitment to customer service.
Demonstrated ethics, integrity, professionalism, innovation, and strategic thinking
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, budgeting and auditing
Interpretation of an extensive variety of technical material in books, journals, and manuals
Analysis of several variables simultaneously to determine specific action; Understanding, interpretation, and application of laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations
Calculation of statistics; Preparation of accurate documentation
Compilation and preparation of reports
Provision of prompt and accurate responses to internal and external inquiries regarding financial matters, and business office policies and procedures
Solicitation of input from and collaboration with unit leadership to ensure appropriate service needs are met
Degree: MBA or other advanced accounting or finance degree required.
Certifications: Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant preferred
Minimum of ten (10) years experience in Accounting and Finance in non-profit higher education
Minimum of five (5) years leadership position in Accounting and Finance in non-profit higher education
Experience working with tuition, endowments, and sponsored funds
Experience in modeling complex financial issues, including financial forecasting and analysis
Experience in healthcare (medical/dental) clinic financial operations preferred
Audit experience preferred
