The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Department of Financial Services is seeking an Accountant I to perform entry-level Accounting work for student accounts receivable. This position is responsible for billing $3 million annually to the federal government and other private sponsors, preparing financial documentation and transfer, depositing and reviewing for accuracy, posting of funds received, preparing daily and monthly reports and approving refunds to sponsors and students for cancelled classes and overpayments.

Handle all aspects of billing for students sponsored by third party payers. Prepare timely third party tuition bills in various formats, include all required documentation and update student A/R for third party commitments and payments. Maintain professional working relationship with government agencies.
Monitor outstanding sponsor bills and take appropriate action to insure prompt payments.
Review and verify receipt of funds in Quantum Financials and University lockbox before processing payments to over 300 sponsored students annually.
Assure accurate accounting for third party and student funds received through proper integration of Quantum Financials, Banner and billing systems.
Provide prompt assistance and accurate information to students and third party sponsors.
Provide customer service to students in person and by telephone. Answer student billing questions (i.e. Health insurance, 1098-T and refunds); assist with monthly billings, student dental insurance enrollments, application of internal payments, installment agreements, student emergency loans and document imaging.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education : Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field with a minimum of nine (9) credits in Accounting.
Experience with the following strongly preferred:
Working with Banner or a similar ERP system.
Processing of third party billing for sponsored student accounts.
Working in a multi-campus educational setting that serves a widely diverse student population.
Proven customer service skills.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Proficient in the use of software applications such as Word and Excel. Working knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Ability to apply basic analytical skills; to operate manual and automated office equipment, personal computers and financial software to input data; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare and present working papers and supporting documentation.
Other : Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
