We are currently seeking a dynamic and energetic Controller with seven or more years of accounting management experience to join our fully remote team. The ideal candidate will be strategic, analytical, and focused with the drive to meet and exceed our annual revenue goals by examining, recommending, and developing financial policies and procedures.
As Controller you will assist with the development of AIGA’s financial direction and overall strategy. You will plan and manage AIGA’s accounting processes and procedures by performing and overseeing daily financial transactions, leading financial planning and accounting practices, and providing guidance to the Leadership team to effectively maintain the financial health of the organization and ensure alignment with AIGA’s mission and goals.
Ideally, you have broad financial experience (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting); have successfully managed an accounting department including managing audits, gathering and evaluating financial information, and can effectively make actionable recommendations to Leadership Teams to improve department’s effectiveness and productivity. You make decisions and build strategies with a data-driven and analytical mindset. You are proficient and experienced on various computer platforms (Mac, Microsoft & Google office products), as well as association management systems (Salesforce, Fonteva) and you have extensive experience with Accounting software (NetSuites) data management, and are highly skilled in spreadsheet use and proficient with HR/Payroll databases.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Manage finance department, providing and directing policies, procedures, and methods necessary to maintain accurate and compliant records and adequate accounting controls and services
Manage accounting and budgeting matters, following nonprofit industry standards and best practices
Audit internal processes, review accounting and administrative controls, ensuring best practices are consistently applied, to protect AIGA assets
Collaborate with outside auditors on annual audits and IRS Form 990 preparation
Prepare monthly account balance reconciliations and month-end close, including posting and reviewing journal entries and reviewing monthly general ledger account analysis
Prepare and coordinate financial statements including balance sheets, cash flow and income statements
Provide regular updates on the status, trends, and analysis of the budget to management
Manage Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll functions, ensuring required tasks are administered in a timely and accurate manner
Prepare departmental budgets by collaborating with Directors, establishing schedules, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data
Assists CFO with the creation of annual budgets and forecasts
Manage, review and monitors annual budget and forecasts
Meet with Leadership team to discuss significant variances from the established budget
Conduct financial analysis in areas including forecasting, budgeting, cost reduction analysis, and operational performance
Engage with Leadership Team members to support cross-departmental collaboration that ensures all financial solutions positively support the evolving AIGA strategy
AIGA, the professional association for design is the largest and most influential design association in the United States. 18,000 members strong with 75 local and regional chapters, and 200 student groups on college campuses nationwide—AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage, and vital cultural force. AIGA’s national office is located in New York City, however, 100% telecommuting (remote) from a U.S. location is possible with the requirement to be in the NYC office once per month for team workshops and meetings.
WHAT WE REQUIRE:
Minimum of 7+ years of financial management-level experience, preferably in a nonprofit or association organization
Bachelor’s degree with excellent analytical and communication and skills
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred, but not required
Exceptional customer service skills, with a collaborative mindset
Track record of success in delivering financial and operational business solutions
High degree of organizational skills to manage processes, systems, and timelines
Knowledge of financial best practices and current industry trends
Demonstrated success managing a finance department
A driven, energetic, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit
Proven ability to work and thrive in a virtual team environment
Extensive computer proficiency, association management systems (Salesforce, Fonteva) Accounting system (NetSuites) and HR/payroll databases experience
Ability to travel to national AIGA offices, events and/or conferences
