The Staff Accountant plays a key role in assuring smooth and timely operations, documentation, planning and analysis within the organization’s finance functions. In this role, the Staff Accountant supports the Finance & Administration Director in an array of critical functions including financial transactions for the organization, maintenance of financial records, reporting, forecasting and analysis. This position will be supervised by the Finance & Administration Director.
Leads administrative support, record keeping, reporting and documentation for core organizational and campaign-related finance functions.
Executes a variety of work to support the finance director and strengthen back of the office systems for both the national office and the JWJ network;
Supports all financial planning, forecasting and analysis activities (AOP, quarterly, period close, strategic)
Communicates and collaborates regularly and effectively with staff, network leaders, vendors and other JWJ stakeholders;
Actively engages in visioning, planning, and evaluating back-of-the-office capacity-building activities within the Sustainability division;
Collaborates broadly with JWJ staff to strengthen the work of the Finance Department as it relates to national campaigns, projects and local coalitions.
Detailed areas of work currently include:
Overseeing the process for re-granting to external partners relating to JWJ projects, campaigns—including ensuring compliance, detailed accounting of income and expenses, and supporting development staff in reporting to funders
Organizing and maintaining up to date financial records.
Organizing and managing retention files for a required period of time.
Preparing a variety of regular and ad hoc financial or administrative reports.
Providing financial data to aid in organizational proposals and development activities.
Supporting the Finance Director in scheduling, research, writing, editing, and other projects as needed, using Microsoft Office software.
Leading and executing the Accounts Payable process, including semi-monthly check run and annual issuance of 1099’s to contractors.
Identifying and correcting errors and discrepancies; advising the Finance and Administration Director of matters that require his/her attention.
Assisting in developing policies and procedures related to financial management and internal controls.
Preparing and maintaining finance and contract files.

Communicates about and documents work, outcomes, updates and developments in a timely and strategic way;
Successfully transfers knowledge and skill in order to build the capacity of local coalitions and national staff;
Effectively communicates and collaborates within the Sustainability Department, JWJ staff teams, and local affiliates and partners;
Is accountable for and follows through on agreed upon work plans and actions;
Demonstrates the ability to contribute to inter-disciplinary teams and colleagues in a complex environment.
Associates degree or equivalent certification related to the job (i.e. accounting)
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the accounting field in the nonprofit sector with progressive responsibilities.
High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation
Meticulous attention to detail
Strong understanding of accounting principles and terminology
Ability to gain a working knowledge of budget, internal controls
Competence with technology and willingness to become an expert in specific programs
Highly organized and possesses solid administrative skills
Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
Strong research, problem solving, and analytic skills
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Personable with ability to maintain sense of humor under pressure
Capability to work in fast-paced environment, with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
Salary and benefits: The Staff Accountant is a union-represented position, and, consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, starting salary is mid to high $50,000/annually, depending on experience. Pursuant to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Jobs With Justice provides a competitive benefits package that includes paid vacation, medical, dental, retirement and professional development benefits.
