The Hormel Institute Human Resources Generalist 1 will specialize in recruitment administration, time and absence, benefits, compensation, HRMS data integrity and employee leaves/exits. This HR Generalist position reports to the HR manager and is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of HR and payroll data while also providing on-going maintenance of PeopleSoft HRMS information for The Hormel Institute’s administrative and academic units. The Human Resources Generalist will support compliance with University and internal policy and procedure.
Ensures recruitment procedures are followed to mitigate risk to the institution through consistent policy application and standardization as well as to ensure the hiring process isn’t impeded. Engages with HR manager when complex issues arise.
Partners with HR manager, accountant, and hiring supervisor during the hiring process for all employee group positions to discuss promotion of jobs, compensation, benefits, and employment-related policies and procedures.
Enters posting requests into HRMS Recruiting Solutions module in close partnership with the hiring supervisor and, when applicable, the search committee.
Partners with HR manager, OVPR HR (as needed), and hiring supervisors to update the employment system throughout the search process, scheduling interviews as needed and ensuring salary offers maintain internal equity.
Partner with hiring supervisor and communicate as primary HR contact with new employees about their background check and English exam (where applicable).
Partners with OHR central recruiter on system issues, HR manager and OVPR HR on recruiting policy questions, and OVPR HR Lead and Hormel accountant on open position and turnover analysis.
Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for departmental SEVIS program (J-1)- initiate, maintain, and manage work visas for foreign nationals.
30% HRMS (Human Resource Management System), Payroll, and Compliance
Ensure overall data integrity in PeopleSoft by entering, updating, and monitoring appointment data and documenting all HR processes in a timely manner (i.e., hires, payroll, visas, leaves, salary increases, back payments, contract renewals, and terminations).
Enter payroll and audit pre-payroll confirmation reports, abstracts, and other records to ensure accuracy.
Analyze, compile and present reports identified by management to help make business decisions and resolve discrepancies, engaging the HR manager on complex issues.
Monitor deadlines for entry and approvals as Time and Absence Administrator.
Problem-solve system issues and ensure staff compliance, competency, and readiness to adequately use the system.
Initiate and respond to inquiries concerning non-routine issues and identification of potential approaches and solutions for The Institute (i.e. system upgrade problems, future system enhancements). Engage with HR manager when complex issues arise.
Ensure efficient and accurate administration of HR processes (e.g. FMLA entry).
Create and monitor Person of Interest (POI) records.
30% Benefits and Compensation
Partner with hiring supervisors to develop offer letters and communicate with new employees as the primary HR contact regarding benefits, compensation, time/absence procedures and I-9 verification.
Support HR manager in advising supervisors and employees on the administration and interpretation of all aspects of HR and employment-related policy, procedure, programs, contracts, and rules throughout the employee life cycle. This position will specialize in but not be limited to employment verification, employee group policy, leaves, compensation, payroll, time and absence policy and procedures.
Coordinate and conduct new hire orientation bi-monthly to ensure retention of talent and partner with hiring supervisors to ensure onboarding plans are completed.
Initiate and respond to inquiries concerning non-routine issues, conducting research, analyzing data, and problem-solving to identify potential approaches and solutions for The Institute.
5% Other Essential Functions
Initiate exit interviews for terminating employees.
Attend trainings and relevant meetings on the University of Minnesota TC campus.
Stay abreast of University, local, state and federal policies, procedures, and regulations.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
BA/BS in Human Resources or related field, or a combination of related education and professional HR work experience to equal 4 years
Proficiency in MS Office Suite as well as Google applications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated experience managing confidential matters with discretion and sensitivity
Demonstrated prioritization, problem solving and decision making skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner with general supervision, completing assignments accurately and on time
Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
