Detailed Job Description As a member of the Academic Affairs' Provost Office, the Senior Staff Accountant provides support to the Director of Budget, Financial Planning, and Analysis (DBFPA) and the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. The incumbent is primarily responsible for essential operating functions including accounting, budget transfers, compliance, and human resource functions and workflows and serves as a mentor to the non-college academic units, advising them on best practices for fiscal management and budgeting. This requires in-depth knowledge of accounting principles and practices, as well as research skills, independent judgement, critical thinking and analytical skills.
Specifically, the Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for monitoring operating budgets, capital, gift, endowment, special projects, and discretionary accounts. This includes but is not limited to analysis of monthly department statements and performing variance analysis, preparing year-end encumbrance reports, and communicating this information to the DBFPA. This position is also responsible for developing and managing the operation and maintenance of various applications and ad-hoc report requests in Excel. The incumbent has access to private and protected information, and so professionalism, discretion and confidentiality are required.
This position reports to the Director of Budget, Financial Planning and Analysis and serves as back-up to that position as needed.
Required Minimum Qualifications
3-5 years of general accounting experience, operating budget management, and/or financial analysis
Minimum of intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Demonstrated financial, analytical and research skills with attention to detail
Ability to assess task complexities and anticipate requirements to ensure adherence to deadlines and accurate results
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
Excellent customer service skills
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
Ability to maintain discretion in all interactions and manage high level sensitive and confidential information
