Our client is a private pre-K through 12th grade institution serving students throughout the Chicago area. Under the direction of the Board of Trustees and principal, the Controller has overarching responsibility for all financial and business affairs. Position Duties and Responsibilities - Accounting roles, includes support by and supervision of one staff accountant to execute the entire accounting and reporting function, including: - Maintains general ledgers, chart of accounts and all accounting processes and procedures ensuring adequate controls are in place and in compliance with GAAP - Responsible for monthly close including review and approve all journal entries, cash receipts, donations and account reconciliations, review the chart of accounts and other analytical reviews. Prepare and enter payroll and investment journal entries - Prepares monthly reconciliations of brokerage and alternative investment accounts - Prepares monthly and annual budgets, financial statements and supporting schedules to the Board - Prepares financial statements and related disclosures for annual audit as well as annual information required for U.S. Department of Labor form 5500 and IRS form 990 - Prepares and distributes IRS forms 1099 annually - Monitors debt covenants and prepares quarterly compliance report to lenders - Coordinates and supervises the collection, custody, investment, disbursement, accounting, and auditing of all school funds - Leadership and business office roles - Provide strategic consultation in a number of areas including analyzing business performance by tracking (against budget), reporting, and understanding key operating metrics that identify financial trends and recommend corrective action if performance varies from budget - Responsible for oversight and maintenance of financial systems - Blackbaud Financial Edge - Manages payroll disbursement, employee benefit plans and other human resource requirements - Prepare required documentation for annual general insurance renewals - Oversee all student financial accounts, particularly individual tuition accounts for accuracy - Review all pledges and contributions with Development Office; assist with grant applications - Interacts with student families and other tuition funding sources to resolve payment issues - Develops policies and procedures for procurement of goods and services for the schools and manages vendor relationships - Manages all other financial and business-related matters that may arise

Candidate Qualifications - 6+ years of accounting experience including audited financial statements. CPA is preferred - 1.5+ years of nonprofit and/or school experience - Proficient understanding of accounting for investments - Highly effective leader with credibility as a result of demonstrating strong business and financial acumen - Effective decision maker with critical thinking and problem solving skills who operates with a highly collaborative and results orientation - Highly responsive leader who thrives on achieving results - Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to present and discuss information in a way that persuades others and enhances understanding at all levels - Strong analytical and critical thinking skills combined with a strategic business focus |
