Saint Joseph’s University Assistant Director, Budget and Financial Planning Position Summary: The Assistant Director is part of a small, highly-skilled analytical budget and finance team that is committed to the core values of service, transparency, accuracy, timeliness, and data-driven decision making. This team supports and advises the Assistant Vice President and, through that position, the Vice President of Finance & Administration and the President on campus-wide budget matters. The Assistant Director provides outreach and support to all levels of staff and leadership on budget management and development of financial plans, and is a critical collaborator in the development and ongoing improvement of the University’s long-term financial plan. As a campus subject-matter expert on issues relating to budgets and finances, the Assistant Director provides the best possible budgetary analyses, budget processes, and service to University leadership. The Assistant Director should have a passion for practicing positive and inclusive leadership with a comfortable and confident demeanor that constructively engages others in managing change. Duties and Responsibilities: - Provide assistance with financial modeling and analyses to support development of unified all-funds revenue and expense multi-year operating and capital budgets for all units
- Proactively work with budget leads and unit leadership to improve financial outcomes
- Provide actionable recommendations to senior leadership on critical issues, supported by robust financial analyses that identify relevant drivers, trends, benchmarks, risks and opportunities
- Effectively and thoughtfully communicate the financial health of the University in the context of strategic priorities
- Provide staff support to the Planning and Budgeting Committee and to the Finance & Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees
- Prepare executive level financial presentations and reports
- Serve on working groups and committees across campus
- Develop strong, collaborative relationships with senior leadership, budget leads, faculty, administrators, and staff within all units
Secondary Responsibilities: - Participate in new system development and implementation as needed
- Mentor and train individual budget leads and new University employees
- Other duties as needed or as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Budget and Financial Planning
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: - Must be able to physically attend numerous meetings across campus, as well as travel for several days at a time to occasional meetings out of the area
- Must be able to work sustained periods of time on a computer and phone
- Extended hours and weekend work may be required for special projects and peak work periods
Minimum Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related discipline, and, 4 – 6 years of progressively responsible budget, finance, or accounting experience obtained in a comparably complex institution or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Extensive knowledge and experience working with an enterprise financial system
- Advanced working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word; solid working knowledge of Access
- Demonstrated success providing high quality analysis (financial analysis, pro forma modeling, variance analysis, activity-based costing analysis, financial statement analysis) and recommendations that influence outcomes and improve financial results
- Demonstrated strength at communicating persuasively in both oral and written forms
- Ability to communicate financial information and insights directly and effectively to a variety of audiences, and to link financial information to strategic priorities
Preferred Qualifications: - CPA and/or Master’s degree in business administration or other relevant analytical field
- Extensive knowledge and experience with Banner Finance
- Past performance that exceeded expectations in a Higher Education environment
