Responsible for the collection of tax-related information and preparation of tax returns for reporting to taxation authorities at the federal, state, and local levels in a timely manner.

The Tax Department is responsible for ensuring Vanderbilt's compliance with Federal and State tax laws and to act as a resource for departments with respect to tax issues. The tax department ensures the accurate and timely completion and filing of Vanderbilt's Forms 990, 990-T and related international reports, excise tax, property tax, sales tax, business tax, unclaimed property and hotel occupancy tax returns.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Preparing state and local tax documents such as property tax, sales tax, business tax and hotel occupancy tax returns.
• Prepare federal, state, and municipal returns, extensions, and related payments.
• Prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly accounting reconciliations.
• Assist with federal, state and local notice resolution.
• Suggest and implement revised tax compliance procedures upon request.
• Assist with the preparation of IRS Forms 990, 990-T, and related schedules.
• Assist with preparation of state income tax withholding and sales tax exemption applications.
• Prepare annual, quarterly, and monthly accounting reconciliations.
• Respond to notices from the IRS and various tax authorities regarding tax matters.
• Work in collaboration with management to improve policies, procedures, and reporting systems for Vanderbilt University, to ensure federal, state and local tax compliance.
• Perform other tax related responsibilities as requested.

Qualifications :

• A Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience is required .
• Minimum of 2 years' experience with state and local tax compliance or non-profit tax compliance is preferred .
• Strong analytic, technical, written and oral communication, decision making and problem solving skills and the ability to work successfully with management, faculty, staff and students is preferred .
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to manage multiple tasks in a deadline driven environment is required .
• Experience with tax notice resolution is preferred .
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) is preferred .
