Self-Help is looking for an Accounting Associate to join our team in Durham, NC. The Accounting Associate will assist in the preparation and maintenance of monthly financial statements and will act as a liaison between the operations and accounting/finance team for all accounting needs.
Perform general ledger account reconciliations.
Perform Daily/Weekly/Monthly accounting processes, as needed.
Create and post journal entries.
Calculate and monitor needed accruals.
Work with SHCU staff to ensure all general ledger accounts are reconciled.
Ensure that monthly financial statements are prepared on a timely and accurate basis.
Participate in developing Call Reports as well as Federal, State and other regulatory filings.
Utilize and apply knowledge of the fundamental doctrines, theories, principles, and terminology of accountancy, including an understanding of how transactions made in other departments affect accounting records.
Prepare and file IRA withholding and property taxes.
Respond to information/reporting requests from both internal and external sources, when needed.
Actively participate in interdepartmental meetings and assessing the impact accounting or procedural changes will have on the team.
Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.
Credentials, Experience and Skills:
Associates degree in accounting or related field and 4 years of accounting experience, Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of accounting experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience working in banking and with banking core processing software preferred.

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Aptitude to quickly learn new software applications.

Good organization skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal business communication skills.
Ability to work independently while also working as a productive team member.
Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.
Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 40 pounds.
