The Senior Accountant supports the accounts payable (AP) accounting operations of Vanderbilt University by partnering with the Director of Payment Services to ensure the accuracy of AP accounting records through daily, weekly, and monthly analysis. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of institutional mission and vision, and meeting the goals of the Purchasing and Payment Services Department by demonstrating an understanding of procure to pay processes and accounts payable accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Vanderbilt University policies and procedures.
As a member of the Purchasing and Payment Services Team, the Senior Accountant facilitates and maintains strong, collaborative relationships with Vanderbilt's faculty, staff, students and suppliers and identifies additional ways to be of service, ensuring end-user satisfaction. This position contributes to the success of a high-performing Purchasing and Payment Services organization by helping to champion and drive the full procure-to-pay process.
The Purchasing and Payment Services team (P&PS) serves as the single point of contact for the university's procurement and payment activities. Housed within Finance, Purchasing and Payment Services provides an integrated approach to purchasing goods and services by connecting and integrating the procurement function to and throughout the entire supply chain processes within Vanderbilt to the final goods and services receipt process, and finally to payments issued to suppliers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Completes monthly, quarterly and year-end accounts payable closing activities.
Prepares or approves journal entries for accuracy, ensuring adequate and complete supporting documentation exists.
Prepares monthly general ledger account reconciliations timely and elevates issues to the Director of Payment Services.
Assists with developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
Evaluates and recommends improvements in accounting system procedures to ensure accurate application of accounting principles.
Participates regularly in process improvement initiatives under indirect supervision and oversight. Assumes leadership role in process improvement projects as needed.
Serves as an accounts payable liaison with university departments. Responsibilities include coordinating and resolving various issues such as recording transactions, reconciling accounts and communicating process and policy changes.
Applies critical thinking to financial and other information presented within the scope of responsibilities, prepare accurate and timely financial statement supporting schedules, research issues/questions related to financial data, and communicate information to management in a timely and effective manner.
Manages a high volume workload based on weekly, monthly or quarterly deadlines.
Demonstrates expert knowledge of accounting principles with strong analytical and accounting skills and familiarity with GAAP, as well as an ability to grasp university policies and procedures.
Ability to create and analyze financial reports. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and departments to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.
Strong verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.
Proven ability to excel in fast-paced, changing, and challenging environments.
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
A Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in accounting or finance is preferred .
CPA or MACC/MBA is preferred .
3+ years of accounting experience is necessary .
Skill in intermediate Excel and Word applications is necessary .
Time management skills and the ability to work well in a team environment is necessary .
Advanced knowledge of accounting principles and general ledger is necessary .
Advanced understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is preferred .
Proven detail-oriented work style in collaboration with effective written and verbal communication skills is preferred .
Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people, understanding their needs and goals is preferred .
Ability to work co-operatively with others as part of a team, as opposed to working separately or competitively, is preferred .
