The Accountant I position supports the Assistant Comptroller in the College's accounts payable function, general accounting and other related tasks. This position is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the payment processing for the College, including check, direct payment, purchasing card and financial aid payments to students, vendors and staff of the College and the College's Foundation. This coordination requires timely and effective communication within the Fiscal Office as well as with the appropriate departments while following the established fiscal policies and internal control oversight related to review and signatory approval.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Verifies and electronically enters accounts payable invoices into BANNER Accounts Payable Module as well as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts's Accounts Payable system (MMARS)
Receives and reviews vendor invoices for accuracy, reviews check requests and other related documentation for completeness and compliance with financial policies and procedures; reconciles invoices and requests for payment with purchase orders; perform calculations to determine appropriate payment schedule and amount; makes modifications as necessary.
Reviews local and appropriation ledgers to verify sufficient balance for anticipated payments and transfers, adjusts out-of-balance ledgers as needed.
Follows up on account statements and potential payment discrepancies and outstanding payment obligations, serves as liaison between departments and vendors in the resolution of administrative problems and inquiries.
Ensures that potential early payment discounts are taken and all vendors are paid as required to ensure that late payment fees are not incurred.
Maintains logs, enters and balances account data, including reconciling GL account balance to aging detail; generates reports for departments.
Monitors invoices and related documents for services that span fiscal years and are classified as prepaid expenses and tracks invoices related to capitalizable purchases.
Monitors purchase orders and periodically notifies departments of balances.
Composes correspondence to College departments and vendors related to Accounts Payable issues.
Enters local trust fund expenditures and revenues into MMARS system and reconciles to Banner monthly.
Support the PCARD function under the direction of the PCARD manager.
Reviews vendor payments and completes other tasks for annual 1099 reporting requirements at the direction of the Assistant Comptroller.
Assists in fiscal year closing procedures, such as audit of petty cash accounts, and audit schedule preparation.
SALARY: $44,390.06 per year with fringe benefits. An appointment made from outside the bargaining unit (AFSCME) must start at this salary, step #1 of the range or as adjusted in accordance with the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, or (B) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in accounting or auditing, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions as specified in the state job specifications.
Knowledge of accounting practices and procedures, primarily related to Accounts Payable as well as knowledge of state and regulatory compliance and generally accepted accounting principles.
Knowledge of auditable record keeping procedures.
Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Demonstrated ability to work as a productive team member in a multi-tasked, time-sensitive environment
Detail oriented with excellent editing/proofreading skills related to financial reports, accounts, and ledgers.
Experience with BANNER Finance Services similar ERP accounting system(s), preferred.
Experience with Massachusetts Management and Accounting and Reporting system (MMARS), preferred.
Higher education sector experience, preferred.
Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
