Under the direction of the SVP of Finance, the Controller is responsible for the strategic leadership and oversight of the Accounting & Reporting Department. This position will ensure timely and effective decision-making for all Leadership levels in support of the Strategic Vision of ChristianaCare. The Controller will develop, coordinate, and administer Christiana Care Health System's consolidated financial accounting and reporting operations. The Controller will provide expert insight regarding the financial performance of Christiana Care Health System. To stay abreast of all significant internal and external factors impacting accounting and reporting of the health system and to promote the organizational vitality goals of ChristianaCare. The Controller ensures adequate policies and procedures are in place to safeguard the assets of the health system. The Controller is expected to maintain strong working relationships with the management throughout ChristianaCare and will actively participate in various executive and operational steer committees as required.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure the accuracy and integrity of Christiana Care Health System consolidated financial statements.
Direct the analysis and interpretation of financial information and aid in development of business operating plans. Work with the SVP of Finance to monitor operational plans and suggest alternative courses to meet financial expectations. Balance short-term and long-term strategic objectives to maximize ChristianaCare's financial performance. Direct supervision and accountability for the Accounting & Reporting Department.
Oversee monitoring and reporting of the financial performance of ChristianaCare to identify trends and safeguard the assets of the organization. Responsible for interpretation of the financial results, analyze actual versus budget variances, and keep the SVP of Finance and CFO informed of significant events impacting the business performance of the organization.
Ensure proper maintenance of financial records and compliance with finance and accounting standards, regulatory guidelines, and reporting requirements. Provide expert technical accounting understanding and leadership. Implement new Accounting Standards Updates (ASUs) issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and effectively and efficiently implement the new standards.
The Controller leads the annual external audit for ChristianaCare, and thus, reports into the Audit & Compliance Committee of the Board as needed.
Oversee Finance Department resource management to ensure achievement of expense management objectives and efficient and effective use of assets.
Develop an Accounting & Reporting team that enables the achievement of ChristianaCare's goals in a manner consistent with the mission and values of the organization.
The Controller actively participates and represents management during Finance Committee of the Board meetings. The Controller helps prepare the meeting materials and presents to the Finance Committee when necessary.
Controller engages and plays a key role with external consultant for the Defined Benefit Plan Audit (CCHS & HH), Defined Contribution Plan Audit (CCHS), and 403(b) Plan Audit (CCHS). Lead on financial matters pertaining to the Defined Benefit Pension Plan.
Responsible for the accuracy of Accounting & Reporting for acquisition and venture opportunities.
Responsible for all tax matters for ChristianaCare. This includes the filing of the annual 990 & 990T for Christiana Care Health System and all applicable entities. Keeping abreast of new IRS guidance. Works effectively and efficiently with our external tax consultant.
Serves as lead from Finance on the management and operations of the Christiana Care Insurance Company, including reporting to the Board of Directors of the Captive Insurance.
Assist in disclosures necessary to issue debt and to ensure compliance with annual bond covenants.
Proficient in Workday Financials. Strive for automation when applicable.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Undergraduate degree in Accounting and/or Finance.
Certified Public Accountant and/or M.B.A.
Minimum of 10 to 15 years of Accounting experience.
Experience in Healthcare highly desired.
Knowledge of Hospital Net Revenue Accounting desired.
