Working under the direction of the Finance Manager, the Accountant is responsible for providing professional accounting services in accordance with procedures and standards established by MMRMA. To be effective, the Accountant applies financial analysis and review of financial statements and transactions to identify trends and/or issues. In addition, the Accountant will apply problem-solving skills and develop recommendations and implement solutions to identified concerns.
Essential duties for the Accountant Position include, but are not limited to the following:
Responsible for analyzing financial statements and transactions.
Performs risk assessment procedures in evaluating financial and accounting internal controls.
Ensures the integrity of financial information for areas of assigned responsibility.
Plays a vital role in the planning, development, documentation, and implementation of accounting and financial management processes.
Prepares and maintains internal and external financial records, schedules, and reports on a daily, monthly, quarterly, annual, and periodic basis as follows: Reconciles investment statements and bank accounts and prepares necessary journal entries. Prepares schedules for the allocation of investment income to the Member Funds Held on Deposit and compliance with the Member Financial Responsibilities Policy. Processes Net Asset Distributions to Members. Processes and prepares the Regional Risk Management fees for disbursement. Verifies W-9 data. Prepares, issues, and follows up on Form 1099’s for applicable recipients. Manages and processes invoices and sets member payment schedules. Monitors outstanding check register to determine escheatment, if necessary. Manages member contributions accounts receivable. Posts daily lockbox cash receipts. Monitors and maintains all Michigan Community College Risk Management Authority (MCCRMA) documents and agreements. Works with the Finance Department team in the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
Performs all daily accounting duties for the MCCRMA including receipts, disbursements, general ledger/trial balance, and quarterly and annual financial statement preparation.
Performs all daily accounting duties for Greenstone Insurance Company including receipts, disbursements, and general ledger/trial balance preparation.
Prepares certain annual financial budgets and projections.
Prepares schedules and supporting materials associated with the annual financial audit and periodic Department of Insurance and Financial Services examinations.
Supports the work of the other accounting functions within the Finance Department.
Builds and maintains respectful, professional, positive working relationship with members, staff, and service providers using principles of good customer service.
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
Experience - Three to five years of relevant accounting work experience; Insurance Industry or Public Entity Pooling experience preferred.
Required Knowledge and Skills - Advanced financial skills in the areas of accounting, internal controls, business processes, analytics, problem solving, financial statement preparation, and financial schedule preparation. Advanced expertise in the use of MS Excel and Word, including spreadsheet preparation and pivot tables. Must be computer literate to effectively utilize the MMRMA Risk Management Information System (RMIS), other organizational software systems, and proficient in office technology including the use of laptops, tablets, check and other printers, and other devices. Effective customer service skills as those skills are used in email, through phone calls, and in verbal and written communications, with a respect for discretion and confidentiality. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, and effective retention and judgement abilities. Must be dependable, reliable, deadline-driven, and work well in a team environment, when working individually, and when working remotely. Well-developed interpersonal skills.
