The UCPath Center is the University of California's shared services center in Riverside, CA. The UCPath Center manages the payroll, benefits, and other human resources transactions for more than 200,000 UC employees working across ten UC campuses, five medical centers, three national labs and more. The Sr. Staff Accountant reports to the Finance Manager of the UCPath Center and uses advanced accounting concepts and organizational objectives to complete departmental reconciliations and resolve issues. Regularly works on highly complex accounting assignments that are of diverse scope requiring analysis of identifiable factors, using multiple accounting and financial sources. The Sr. Staff Accountant demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, completing analysis and developing recommendations. This position normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work, with general instructions provided on new or unique accounting assignments. The incumbent interacts with senior internal and external staff on matters of some significance to the accounting organization. The Sr. Staff Accountant oversees accounting staff and mentors, trains and assists as necessary to allow the department to function at an optimal level.
Review, analyze, monitor and prepare highly complex reconciliations (e.g., payroll balance sheet accounts and Composite Benefit Rate) and journal entries which require a detailed level of knowledge general accounting concepts, GAAP and GASB.
Automate and streamline accounting processes and procedures within the department
Mentor and train accounting staff on various topics including, but not limited to, general accounting methods, federal and state tax reconciliations, composite benefit rate (CBR) and new departmental accounting policies and procedures
Work with various departments to support the implementation of the PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) system and ensure the functionality of the system meets the accounting and finance requirements of the university
Other duties as assigned
Oversee and review federal and state regulated tax filings, deposits and audits in coordination with the respective production workstreams
Prepare and reconcile Benefit Plan Accounting vendor payments and work with Benefits team to clear reconciling items and discrepancies
Minimum of three years of related experience, with advanced knowledge of the accounting function.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and intermediate knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint)
Able to streamline and automate accounting processes and procedures and efficiently identify, research and resolve problems
Able to extract, verify, compile and analyze complex accounting and finance related data from a variety of sources and summarize in a clear and concise manner both written and verbally for senior management.
Must be experienced in use of financial transactions and financial systems, as well as related policy, accounting and regulatory compliance requirements.
Excellent communications skills, with ability to effectively interact, collaborate, and influence across all levels of an organization.
Highly self-motivated and self-directed, ability maintain flexibility and work under pressure to meet deadlines in an environment of changing priorities
Able to think strategically and focus on the accomplishments of the UCPath Center's mission and priorities.
Ability to accomplish assigned projects without compromising the integrity of the UCPath Center and/or University of California policies and procedures. Able to provide excellent service with integrity.
Experience in a higher education environment a plus.
Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
