The Controller is an integral part of the Business Office responsible for coordinating and assisting in the preparation of financial reports, such as income statements, balance sheets, and analyses of historical and future income and expenses, in addition to other special reports that may be needed. The Controller also oversees the functions of accounting, audit, and manages the general ledger for the $4 million annual budget. The role reports directly to the Executive Director, and additionally collaborates with the Head of School.
Alzar School is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to “build leaders who positively impact the world.” We do this through various programs and learning opportunities, principally as a semester high school for 10th-11th grade students. In addition to the semester we offer a growing slate of programs including gap semesters, short summer courses, a center in Chile (Base Patagonia), and a commercial raft company (Confluences River Expeditions). TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minimum of 3 years experience in non-profit accounting. Independent School experience is a plus. A working knowledge of nonprofit accounting is essential. Experience in Blackbaud Financial Edge software is a plus, but training is available.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
GENERAL ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL REPORTING
Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial information;
Preparing monthly financial statements, including variance analyses;
Supervising general accounting operations;
Reviewing account reconciliations on a monthly basis;
Ensuring timely, accurate payment of invoices and bills;
Assisting the Executive Director in the monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts working with other administrators and department heads concerning budget performance;
Communicating accounting policies to affected employees and ensure compliance.
Supervising all incoming cash receipts and deposits including income through the tuition management software;
Supervising cash disbursements for special projects.
Taking lead position on preparation of schedules and work papers for annual audit.
Taking lead position on Form 990 preparation, or working with auditing firm to compile.
Maintaining permanent office files for all audit schedules prepared by school.
Works closely with the Advancement office in preparation of journal entries for Advancement Gift Batches.
Meets regularly with the Advancement office to ensure accounts are in agreement with the Business Office including: unrestricted annual giving, restricted annual giving, campaign giving and pledges, endowment giving and pledges.
Books and monitors pledge balances, in accordance with donor intent.
Maintains projects in general ledger.
Works closely with the Advancement office to update and enforce Gift Acceptance Policies.
Tracks budget versus actual for salary and stipend general ledger accounts
Creates monthly payroll
Reviews general ledger entries reflecting payrolls
Alzar School is a semester school for students in 10th and 11th grades. Students are highly motivated teenagers who want to make a difference in the world. Alzar School’s campus is in Cascade, Idaho, and Patagonia, Chile and each semester includes extended cultural immersion in Chile. Faculty travel with the students to Chile, living and working there for six weeks each semester. The school uses honors and AP-level coursework, outdoor adventure, and international travel to challenge students. Our mission at Alzar School is “We build leaders who positively impact the world.”
