RequirementsThe General Accounting Office (GAO) in the University's Division of Financial Affairs is responsible for the integrity of the University's financial records and systems and for assuring that the transactions entered into the University's General Ledger are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Accounting Policies of the University. GAO promotes the efficient use and stewardship of University resources and compliance with laws, regulations and reporting requirements through technical financial and analytical skills, and expertise in accounting knowledge.
The
Senior Accountant's areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to the general ledger review, journal entries, account reconciliations, audit support and special projects. Specifically, the Senior Accountant will perform duties that include but are not limited to:
- General Ledger Review - Review assigned balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy and adherence to generally accepted accounting principles as well as University policies. The accounts include but are not limited to prepaid expenses, other accounts receivables and accrued liabilities. The accountant also works closely with the Director of financial accounting to monitor inter-company transactions and other anomalies and help guide the departments to make necessary correcting entries.
- Account Reconciliations - Analyze and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts. The Accountant will research outstanding items and work with various departments across the University community to make adjusting entries as needed.
- Journal Entries - Prepare as journal entries as needed as well as assist in the review and approval of journal of various assigned journal entries.
- Audit Support - Preparation of adjusting entries, supporting schedules and other related analysis in readiness for the annual financial statement audit.
- Other Duties - The Accountant is the primary back up for other aspects of accounting within the General Accounting Office. The Accountant will, therefore, be expected to cross train in these areas.
Work InteractionsThis position works closely with various departments across the University community as well as external points of contacts including custodians, auditors and various financial and accounting professionals. It is therefore imperative to build and maintain strong work relationships with these groups.
Qualifications- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required
- A minimum of three years in progressive accounting experience required
- Intermediate to advanced level Excel skills required
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Excellent organization skills with attention to detail
- Excellent analytical and communication skills
