Position Summary:
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Accountant for the Office of the University Controller. Reporting to an Accounting Manager II in the University Controller's organization, this position is responsible for maintaining accounting and fiscal control over funds provided to the university that are restricted for a particular use by an outside party (and in some cases by the university). Under the direction of the Accounting Manager II, this position performs general accounting activities that are complex and broad in nature, specializing in general ledger and project functions within the endowment and restricted gift areas, to include the analysis and review of financial data and reports, preparation of general ledger account analyses, and assisting with the preparation of survey's for both internal and external purposes. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of problems consistent with an understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of the University Controller's Office, and consistent with a comprehensive understanding of accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable regulations, and university policies and procedures. Interprets, communicates, and implements policies and practices to meet the needs of a diverse client population. Works independently, with broadly defined work objectives, and limited review of overall results. Performs professional work requiring specialized to general knowledge in one or more fields of accounting/finance and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, regulations, and terminology, and applied bases in area of specialization.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Maintains accurate endowment investment balances and reconciles balances and transactions between the Fundriver software tool and the general ledger.
- Responsible for recovery and distribution of endowment spending and gift revenues.
- Creates supplemental schedules and surveys required each fiscal year-end.
- Works directly with Rutgers University Foundation on the processing of endowment and gift funds transferred to the University, opens new endowment and restricted projects, and properly stewards funds to adhere to any donor requirements regarding the use of donated funds.
- Administers the university's endowment pools and separately invested funds within Fundriver, and records the investment activity resulting from the university's investment portfolios.
- Prepares monthly reconciliations between the Oracle general ledger, Fundriver and Northern Trust for the University's investment activity.
- Provides assistance to departments throughout the university in the setup, maintenance and reporting for all restricted and endowment projects
- Interprets, communicates, and implements policies and practices to meet the needs of a diverse client population.
- Works independently, with broadly defined work objectives, and limited review of overall results.
- Reconciles and has oversight over various endowment and restricted gift general ledger accounts and projects.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in a financial/accounting function
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
- Excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.
- Excellent computer skills including an intermediate to advanced skill level in Excel.
- Ability to work independently with good analytical and problem solving skills around accounting analytics and processes.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP/GASB.
- Ability to adapt and or implement new or improved system processes, procedures and technologies.
- Ability to provide timely and professional customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree/CPA
- Experience working with an ERP system, Oracle Cloud, Endowment accounting and Fundriver.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- May be required to work extended hours during the fiscal year-end closing period and other peak periods throughout the year.
