As the chief accountant of Ohio Wesleyan University, the Controller is responsible for organizing, directing, assessing, and improving the University’s system of accounting and financial controls, external reporting, audit, and compliance with all related University and government regulations and policies.
The Controller directly supervises and maintains quality control of the following areas: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, debt service accounting, construction and fixed asset accounting, grants accounting, credit card/ACH processing, endowment and investment accounting, internal controls, student accounts, tax reporting, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws related to higher education organizations. The position coordinates monthly and fiscal year end close and prepares the University’s quarterly and annual financial statements, corporate tax returns and other financial compliance reports.
The Controller reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration and manages a staff of four direct reports. The position works collaboratively with the Senior Director of Financial Innovation, Planning, and Budgeting, as well as staff in human resources and payroll, advancement (restricted gifts, annuities and endowments), academic departments, and other administrative offices.
Required Qualifications and Certifications:
· Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or related field.
· Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with active license in the State of Ohio.
· Seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including responsibility for generating timely and accurate financial information and reports.
· Experience in higher education fund accounting or complex not-for-profit fund accounting, including endowment and grant accounting, financial statement creation and 990 reporting.
· Four years of successful supervisory experience managing a professional staff.
· Effective written communication skills.
· High professional standards and ethical sense characterized by honesty, integrity, openness, and fairness.
· Graduate degree such as an M.B.A. or M.S. in Accounting, or related field.
· Five years of accounting experience in higher education.
· Experience as a controller at a private college or university.
· Strong administrative skills, including project planning and management.
· Successful experience:
o Coordinating audit activities in a leadership role.
o Developing, implementing and maintaining internal controls to effectively safeguard and manage financial resources.
o Interpreting and appropriately applying accounting principles, standards and regulations.
o Creating the financial statements and 990s of an organization.
o Developing and maintaining strong collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of constituencies as a service-oriented professional.
· Effective speaking and listening skills with the specific ability to explain financial information to employees at all levels in an organization.
· Effective presentation skills.
· Experience with the following or similar systems: Microsoft Dynamics GP, Ellucian PowerCampus, Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge, and ADP payroll system.
· Experience with ERP system conversions and chart of account revisions.
