About the Position The City of Birmingham is seeking a Principal Accountant to assist in the oversight of the accounting operations within its Finance Department. Reporting to a Chief Accountant, the Principal Accountant performs and oversees a variety of accounting related responsibilities, including, but not limited to, the maintenance of accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, general ledger, grant, and/or budgetary accounts, while ensuring compliance to federal, state, and local guidelines and laws (e.g., Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standards Board). The Principal Accountant serves as the first-level manager and supervisor of professional accountants (Senior Accountants and Accountants) and administrative staff.
