Department Summary
The Accounting Services department's main function is reviewing, analyzing and recording the financial data for the University. We are responsible for monthly and year-end closing of accounting records and preparing this information for reporting to the CSU Chancellor's Office and various state agencies. In addition, we are proud to service the University departments by providing guidance and training as needed.

Job Summary
The Associate Controller is a hands-on leader responsible for the financial reporting and compliance of the university, along with developing and performing the operational accounting activities of the university. This position oversees accounting assignments of diverse scope, including journal entry preparation, debt financing, reconciliations and analyses, accounts receivable, banking and treasury operations, chart of accounts, tax, fixed assets, and custom auxiliary reports for all campus units including auxiliaries.
Functional Management:
The Associate Controller is a hands-on leader responsible for the financial reporting and compliance of the university.
- Oversees the preparation of university and auxiliary financial statements and reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as the Financial Information Reporting Management System (FIRMS), capital project capitalization and fixed asset account, and financial reporting requirements of the university and auxiliaries. Ensures timeliness in the completion of fiscal month and year-end close. Supports the controller in the annual financial statement audit processes.
- Plans, organizes and directs the day-to-day activities of the Accounting Services department, including the Reporting and Tax unit. Oversees accounting assignments of diverse scope, including journal entry preparation, reconciliations and analysis, chat of accounts, tax, fixed assets, accounts receivable, banking operations and custom auxiliary reports.
- Provides tax coordination and support to campus departments. Oversees the timely completion and submission of Umelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) and Nonresident Alien Tax reports.
- Develops, provides oversight, and direction for the preparation of a variety of communications, presentations for various stakeholders throughout the campus with an emphasis on auxiliary units and their boards.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation, policy and best practice.
- Represents the university in CSU system-wide Finance Users Groups including the Financial Standards Advisory Committee (FSAC). Interprets and stays current on campus/auxiliary, CSU, federal and state regulations, guidelines, policies and mandates that relate to the campus accounting functions. Implements all relevant accounting pronouncements derived from GAAP, GASB and F ASB. Ensures compliance with relevant laws, policies and procedures referenced by the integrated CSU administrative manual (ICSUAM).
Information Technology:
Continually evaluates the current technology and need for new technology to meet the University's financial data processing, control, security and reporting requirements.
- Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) on PeopleSoft Common Financial System (CFS) for all accounting and financial reporting activities; leads CFS system upgrades and module implementations.
- Acquires in-depth knowledge of the campus department's systems and processes in order to document, recommend, develop and implement improved process flows.
Leadership Management:
- Supports the university's leadership in its strategic and operational decisions.
- Supports subordinates to build competencies others through effective coaching, performance management and mentoring. Provides clear direction and encourages professional and career development for employees.
- Supports and introduces efficiency initiatives with broad impact on campus fiscal operation.
- Demonstrates commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. Creates and implements methods for improving individual and team performance. Builds effective teams committed to organizational goals.
- Fosters collaboration and creates an environment in which employees are recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the success of the team.
Administration/Operations/University Partnership:
- Partners with campus administrators, students, faculty and Administrators regarding the university's administrative and operational processes, with a goal of continuously developing and improving systems. Works closely with and collaborate with the campus Auxiliary Organizations for integrated financial and accounting business processes. Ensures that assigned accounting reporting systems and procedures are in compliance with established administrative policies and procedures and acceptable accounting standards.
Other Duties - campus may assign additional responsibilities as they arise.
Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, 'Exempt' position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule
Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.
Key Qualifications
- Strong technical knowledge in Fund Accounting, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), & Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).
- Working knowledge of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP System); Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Excellent management, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in Business. -
Experience: Seven (7) years of accounting experience with Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master degree in business, accounting, finance or any related field and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
- Higher Education experience.
Salary
Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,800 - $9,200 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,583 - $14,713 per month
