Position Summary
Tax Accounting, within the Controller's Office, provides excellent service to internal and external customers including University staff, external auditors, third-party advisors and administrators, as well as government taxation authorities while operating within a structured environment of effective and efficient financial controls.
This position is primarily responsible for the preparation of required Federal and State tax reports and returns for the University and its affiliates. Other duties include the development of processes ensuring compliance with Federal and State tax laws and the analysis of regulatory changes in taxation and how they may apply to and affect the University. The ideal candidate is able to work as a team member and is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who will support the mission of the university through their work.
This is a 40 hours per week, full time, benefits eligible position.
Essential Functions
- Prepares all University and its sub-corps Federal income tax and information tax returns
- Assists in data collection and analysis of unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) generated from the many investment funds on both Federal and State level
- Prepares all University and its sub-corps State tax returns, franchise tax reports and State Sales and Use tax reports
- Conducts research on Federal and State tax topics, as needed, and advises accordingly on tax consequences to the University and its affiliates
- Tracks tax law changes and develops necessary procedures and reporting systems to ensure governmental and regulatory compliance
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
- Assists in the auditing process
- Recognizes, records and maintains income tax entries and files
- Communicates complex tax related information to varied audiences in written and verbal forms
- Works on special projects as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance or related field
- 3 years of related tax accounting experience
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
- Advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software
- Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and accounting principles
- Advanced knowledge of accounting systems
Preferences
- Experience preparing tax returns for an accounting firm or for tax exempt organizations
- Higher education accounting related experience
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Ability to accurately research, analyze, interpret, and apply complex accounting principles
- Ability to gather information, interpret data, and make accurate projections
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
