Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking an Accountant who will report to the Senior Accountant, to act as a liaison between Finance and the Office of Sponsored Programs (“OSP”) and is responsible to ensure grant related transactions are processed timely and in accordance with applicable regulations and Laboratory policy. Assist in preparing, monitoring, and analyzing month-end closings and quarterly financial statements; participating in annual and special audits, monitoring capital budget and fixed assets, and cash reporting. This position may also be called upon to provide, in a supporting role, other finance or OSP functions as needed.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist with the Labor Cost Transfer process including prioritizing outstanding items and working with OSP and finance accountants to ensure workload is processed timely and accurately.
- Ensure that institutional policies, laws and regulations regarding sponsored research support are proactively addressed and adhered to.
- Monitor research payroll expenditures to ensure allowability, allocability and reasonableness of expenses being charged to awards.
- Prepare daily/monthly OSP and finance journal entries.
- Assist in preparing month-end and annual closing reports, quarterly internal financial statements, and the preparation of the year-end financial and federal Uniform Guidance audits.
- Provide support to other Finance units as needed in the following functions to advance the effective and efficient operation of the Laboratory’s finances:
- Manage daily operating cash accounts.
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Capital budgeting and account maintenance
- Debt management
- Interface/integration with grants administration
- Taxes and payments in lieu of taxes
- Business case analysis
- Effective analytical, financial and business management skills. Ability to earn the trust and respect of co-workers and Laboratory community, creating positive relationships.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize work, ability to meet multiple and often competing deadlines. Strong project management skills.
- Ability to evaluate and improve processes and leverage technology and tools. Inclination to document processes and policies while working in an environment where personal relationships and service are highly valued. Must be highly service oriented, while also motivated and able to drive increased efficiency.
- Must be highly proficient with information technology and systems, including Microsoft Suite applications, and have excellent Excel skills. Ability to learn and work with various accounting programs.
- Experience with Infor/Lawson, and/or similar not-for-profit accounting applications strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with OMB Circulars, federal regulations and policies concerning grants administration.
Position Requirements
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required
EXPERIENCE:
- One or more years of accounting experience, preferably in non-profit organizations.
SKILLS: Knowledge of Crystal Reports and Lawson Software. Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite.
