The Position
The Brearley School seeks a talented and dedicated professional for the position of Assistant Chief Financial Officer (Assistant CFO)/Controller. The Assistant CFO/Controller reports to the CFO/COO and leads the accounting and budget functions of the School.
The Assistant CFO/Controller has five (5) direct reports and has oversight of the following areas: departmental budgets, variance reports and forecasts, cash management; accounts payable and accounts receivable; general ledger, financial operations; financial reporting; fixed assets; tax requirements; grant compliance; procurement; and student accounts. Other duties as assigned by the CFO/COO. Provides a confidential resource to the community as sensitive data is managed and shared cross-functionally.
Position Overview
Responsible for directing and managing the school’s daily accounting and finance operations. Provide monthly financial reporting.
Principle Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
- Manage and maintain general ledger including monthly review and reconciliation of general ledger accounts, preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries, distribution of monthly general ledger information to budget managers, and preparation of monthly financial reports for management and quarterly reports to the Board of Trustees. Ensure proper classification and accounting for gifts and monthly reconciliation of accounting records with Development Office gift receipts.
- Hire, train, and provide day-to-day oversight of the accounting and finance personnel.
- Ensure all federal, state, and local tax requirements are met for the School and supported organizations, including preparation of 990 filings and 5500 filings.
- Oversight of surveys, compliance reports, and other requests for financial data; and assist the CFO/COO with the preparation of the annual and long-term budgets and preparation of variance reports and year-end projections.
- Prepare annual audit schedules, supporting analysis, and audit reports. Oversee and coordinate annual audits with the School’s audit firm.
- Cash Management: monitor daily cash balances, calculate and initiate the annual endowment draw, periodically prepare cash flow projections, and ensure the proper reconciliation of cash accounts.
- Investment Management: work with CFO/COO and investment advisors on investment related activities and reporting.
- Other duties as assigned by the CFO/COO.
The Qualifications
The Brearley School seeks the following professional experiences and personal qualities in the new Assistant CFO/Controller.
- The ability to function as the “Right Hand Person” to the CFO/COO; the position has both leadership and board-level accountability.
- 15+ years of accounting experience with at least 7 years in a non-profit or educational setting strongly preferred. Specific knowledge of fund, endowment, and investment accounting is desirable.
- The ability to take successful ownership of projects and tasks – from design through completion.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills required.
- Proven analytical and financial modeling skills and a high level of attention to detail are required.
- Previous supervisory experience required.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Management or related fields is required; an MBA or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is strongly preferred.
- High degree of technology literacy is required.
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills required.
- Knowledge of Blackbaud NXT, Paymerang and Ceridian Dayforce software preferred.

Compensation & Benefits
Pay range: $190,000 to $215,000. This represents the present low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience.
