Job Summary: Performs advanced professional accounting activities for a specialized, complex assignment or functional area requiring application of an advanced professional knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Ensures or evaluates compliance and accountability of financial programs and business operations/processes. May supervise or lead lower level professional accountants and other staff.
Additional Department Summary: This position is responsible for managing financial transactions involving contracts, grants, and overhead funds for the Alabama Transportation Institute (ATI), The Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS), the Alabama Transportation Policy Research Center, and the Center for Transportation Operations Policy Safety Center to ensure compliance with university and/or agency regulations and restrictions.
Roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Provide financial guidance and effectively communicate with PIs of multiple externally funded projects daily. Assist with UA and College of Engineering financial reporting requirements related to grant submissions, awards, expenditures, and administration. Ensure internal UA deadlines are met regarding Purchasing Card requirements, employee travel and reimbursement, PA processing, leave submission, etc. Ensure PIs continually have all information required to make crucial decisions regarding the allocation of personnel and expenses incurred over the life of the project. Work with ATI and affiliated Centers administrative staff to support daily operations that include sponsor meetings, planning meetings, workshops for external sponsors, employee team building functions, etc.
Required to have knowledge of ATI and affiliated Center's goals, standards, policies, and procedures which may include limited familiarity of other departments within the College of Engineering. Must be aware of the interrelationship of both people and functions within the Center and College.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of accounting experience; OR Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have the ability to analyze and interpret complex data; and ability to demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and directional initiative.
Skills and Knowledge: Effective oral and written communication skills as well as excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively. Proficiency in word processing, advanced spreadsheet and database management. Ability to utilize online financial systems (Banner and Cayuse). Ability to work with faculty and staff on diverse projects and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred experience in an educational environment, specifically UA fund accounting and/or contract and grant administration experience and knowledge of UA's accounting and budget policies and procedures. Experience with Banner and Concur are strongly preferred.
