Head of Finance
Description
We are an early stage venture capital firm with $175M of AUM across three funds. We invest in businesses that create new frameworks of ownership and opportunity within marginalized communities in the U.S.
The Head of Finance will report to the General Partner and work closely with the executive leadership team and third party fund administrator team. We’re looking for someone who is self-directed and can lead the strategy and execution of all of the firm’s finance and operations functions.
This is a great role for someone who has prior experience as a Controller or VP of Finance at a venture capital firm or fund administrator, and who is looking to apply their skills and passion to a rapidly growing, mission-driven firm. This role provides the opportunity to take on additional responsibility and growth as the firm grows.
Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee the third-party fund administrator and supporting technology platforms
- Evolve internal finance and accounting systems and processes to a world class venture capital standard and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Drive the annual valuation, audit, and tax reporting processes across all entities in coordination with the external fund administrator, tax/audit partners, and firm leadership
- Coordinate with the fund administrator on the preparation of financial statements, capital allocations, capital calls, distributions, and carried interest calculations
- Build and manage a high quality budget and forecasts for the management company and funds
- Maintain up-to-date understanding of policies, industry best practices, accounting principles, and regulatory standards relevant to venture capital fund management and compliance
- Manage and implement the valuation policy
- Correspond with LPs on all finance and operations matters, including for fundraising, reporting, and administrative requests
- Prepare for operational due diligence processes in conjunction with fundraising
- Maintain LP portals and respond to ad hoc queries
- Oversee HR processes, including payroll, benefits administration, employee handbook, etc.
- Support the management of third-party service providers including HR/payroll, banking, insurance, IT/cybersecurity, and compliance
- Maintain a current and accurate view of portfolio company cap tables and support the management of data relating to portfolio company performance and reporting
- Provide ad hoc support to the investment team on valuation and returns analysis and financial modeling
Requirements
- Experience working in finance for a venture capital firm and/or fund administrator in a Controller level role or above
- At least 7 years track record of progressive career development in accounting and finance
- Highly detail oriented and able to ladder up the details to the “big picture”
- Proactive and assertive about getting information needed to move the work forward
- Ability to be flexible and highly responsive to client needs and requests
- Excellent, timely communication skills and experience partnering with an executive team
- Experience in month-end close, regular reporting requirements, and financial modeling
- Advanced Excel proficiency, including building and maintaining financial models
- Degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience
- Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations
Location: We are a fully remote company. CA or NY preferred.
