The plant accountant provides for the prompt and accurate closeout processing of utility work orders; maintains efficient and accurate work order and plant accounting records and performs quality control checks against supporting documentation. Provides assistance in analyzing work order costs as related to construction and estimation of expenditures. Monthly, coordinates with the plant accountant supervisor to close the transportation and fixed asset modules: reconcile inventory and provide analysis and reporting to leadership. Supports operations and engineering in work plan, budget preparation, and analysis. Assists in preparing receivable invoices of third-party damages to cooperative owned assets.

Job Responsibilities:
1. Maintains current records for work orders including cost accounting work order procedures and auditing procedures.
2. Performs quality control checks on work orders. Including auditing As Built sheets, material inventory data and work order charge outs. Works to improve and develop the review and quality control process. Works with auditors to share information when requested. (from Billing Specialist job description)
3. Compares work orders to staking sheets and identifies discrepancies.
4. Assures work orders have time and materials properly charged to appropriate accounts.
5. Prepares work orders for closeout and performs timely capitalization of all work orders.
6. Maintain work order and service order reconciliations for timely capitalization/close out.
7. Plans, reconciles and reports results of period cycle count inventories.
8. Maintains complete records for work order cost accounting system, including balancing construction work in progress accounts monthly to the general ledger.
9. Monitors monthly transportation and work order transactions and closes related modules in a timely manner.
10. Reviews and closes out material inventory module in a timely manner.
11. Prepares monthly plant accounting related journal entries and adjustments.
12. Prepares quarterly account reconciliations related to fixed assets and plant.
13. Prepares quarterly IFTA returns and other agency reports as required.
14. Assists with preparation of audit work papers and other reports for annual audit.
15. Assists with preparation of receivable invoices of third-party damages to cooperative owned facilities.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Job Requirements:
1. Education/Experience:
a. College degree in accounting or finance.
b. Five years of related work experience. Electric utility experience preferred.
2. Knowledge and Skills:
a. Ability to apply accounting knowledge, experience and speed with attention to detail and accuracy.
b. Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, oral presentations, the ability to build strong working relationships, and the ability to interact positively with employees at all levels within the organization and as required, Inland members.
c. Knowledge and experience in operating office equipment, including 10-key and computer (accounting software) with speed and accuracy.
d. Advanced knowledge of Excel and a working knowledge of Word.
e. Must have understanding of electric utility industry operations and financing.
f. Technical understanding of flow of costs in general ledger and sub-ledgers.
g. Thorough understanding of principles of internal controls and their implementation.
h. Keeps current on technological advances in the finance and accounting field.
i. Ability to research and reconcile difficult and complex accounts.
j. Ability to assess processes and suggest improvements to improve departmental efficiencies.
3. Mental Demands/Working Conditions:
