Sumter Local Government Consulting is pleased to assist the City of Acworth, GA, in recruiting a City Treasurer. The City Treasurer reports to the City Manager and serves as a critical member of the city’s executive leadership team.
Located just 35 miles north of Atlanta in Cobb County, Acworth, Georgia, boasts a charming historic downtown, two beautiful lakes, endless trails and greenspaces, and a commercial district with ample modern amenities for its community's residents and visitors alike, all located in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains.
A cornerstone of the Treasurer's duties is preparing and analyzing complete financial statements. These statements provide critical insights into the city’s financial health, enabling informed decision-making and strategic planning. The Treasurer also oversees data processing and treasury functions, audit coordination, and payroll processing in-house.
The Treasurer leads the development of both the operating and capital budgets. This process involves collaboration with various departments to ensure that budgetary allocations support the city's strategic initiatives and community needs.
In addition to a traditional Treasurer role, the Treasurer oversees Customer Service operations for the city, including utility billing for power, sanitation, stormwater, and property tax collection.
This leadership role ensures the Finance and Customer Service Departments operate efficiently and effectively, delivering high-quality and accurate financial services to the city and its residents.
The position requires the successful candidate to meet the following qualifications:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completing a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to finance
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the finance department in order to direct and coordinate work within the finance and customer service departments, usually interpreted to require ten years of related experience
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Government Finance Officer certification is preferred
Proven ability to work in a team environment
Experience with Public Utilities, SPLOST and Hotel Motel tax
Preferred experience using Edmunds financial software or comparable software is beneficial
The hiring range for this position is $118,500 - $125,900.

The City has a board-manager government structure. Under this structure, the Board of Aldermen fills the primary policymaking role and oversees the executive functions of the City. The Mayor and Board are elected at-large for 4 year staggered terms. They assign the day-to-day duties of the executive role to the City Manager. There has been great stability in the elected body for the last 25 years that has allowed a consistent pursuit of the community’s vision.
The day-to-day operations of the City are led by an appointed City Manager, James Albright. The Manager is supported by 171 full and part-time employees across 11 departments. In addition to traditional government services the City operates public power, sanitation, and stormwater utilities.
The City operates on a fiscal year of July 1 to June 30. The approved General Fund budget for FY 25 is $21,226,552. They also have a traditional SPLOST program that supports transportation, public safety, and parks.
