The Director of Finance is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for overseeing the school’s financial health and operations. Reporting to the VP of Finance & Business Operations, this role ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The Director of Finance plays a key role in developing financial strategies, maintaining internal controls, managing cash flow, and leading the finance team.
This individual will collaborate with school leadership, department heads, and external auditors to provide financial insights that support decision-making and long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive financial professional with strong leadership skills and a commitment to operational excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
Provide in-depth financial analysis and variance reports comparing actuals to budget and forecast, offering insights to the CFO and school leadership.
Monitor financial performance, identify trends, and recommend strategies for improvement.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
Collaborate with the VP of Finance & Business Operations on the annual budgeting process, ensuring alignment with the school’s strategic objectives.
Assist in preparing financial forecasts, incorporating revenue trends, expense management, capital projects, and long-term financial planning.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard financial assets and ensure accurate reporting.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, as well as internal financial policies and procedures.
Lead the annual audit process, coordinating with external auditors to ensure timely and successful completion while addressing any findings.
Partner with external CPAs to prepare and file income tax returns.
Oversee sales tax and regulatory reporting to maintain compliance with all financial obligations.
Cash Flow and Treasury Management:
Maintain cash flow projections to ensure the school meets its financial commitments.
Manage bank accounts, investments, and financial instruments to optimize liquidity and financial stability.
Accounting Operations & Team Leadership:
Oversee all accounting functions, including billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger management, revenue recognition, and payroll journal entries.
Manage financial systems and ERP software, recommending and implementing enhancements as needed.
Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, including Accounts Payable, Student Billing & Accounting, Controller, and Bookstore staff.
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the finance department.
Collaboration and Communication:
Partner with various departments to support the school’s operational and financial needs, providing guidance and training on financial matters.
Present financial results to VP, Finance & Business Operations, offering insights and recommendations for financial strategy and operational efficiency.
Identify, lead, and participate in strategic initiatives that enhance financial sustainability and organizational effectiveness.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) certification may be preferred.
Several years of progressive financial leadership experience, including experience in a managerial or director-level role.
Strong knowledge of financial and accounting principles, regulations, and best practices.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in financial software and systems.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

In 1986, Idyllwild Arts Academy was founded as an independent, residential arts high school, located in Idyllwild, California. The school serves approximately 300 students from roughly 35 countries and provides pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum.
