The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is seeking an Accountant to work in the Department of Neurology.

The Department of Neurology provides evaluation, treatment, and care for patients suffering from a wide range of neurological disorders including stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and migraine. We provide care through our inpatient and consultative services, our designated Comprehensive Stroke Center, our Level 4 Epilepsy Center, our 22-bed Neuro-Critical Care Unit, and our busy outpatient practice. The Department also provides state-of-the-art rehabilitation services. A number of departmental faculty received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Veteran's Administration to study the role of genetics in stroke, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease, new brain imaging modalities in multiple sclerosis, biomarkers in multiple sclerosis, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and intellectual disability. Many faculty are lead investigators in clinical trials to identify new therapeutic approaches for a broad range of neurological disorders.

The Accountant position accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May supervise, mentor, or coordinate work of others (positions that supervise are responsible for service delivery, quality assurance, and employee performance). May independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources.

Applies entry level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision making occurs within defined parameters. Supervisor defines assignments, expectations, and deadlines. Supervisor may review work for quality. Demonstrates initiative and discretion to resolve routine and non-routine matters.

PRIMARY DUTIES

• Performs, reviews and analyzes accounting transactions insuring completeness, internal accuracy, and conformance with uniform Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

• Prepare daily general ledger activities and accounting transactions ensuring completeness, internal accuracy, and conformance with uniform Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

• Accurately prepare financial statements, such as income statement, balance sheet, and operating activities cash flows. Prepare appropriate statements for assets and current value.

• Administers and maintains assigned accounts to verify accuracy of transactions and uniform application of policies, procedures, and acceptable standards.

• Examines and ensures integrity/reliability of the financial accounting system. Works with principal investigators, faculty, or staff members to identify potential ledger discrepancies between financial system and departmental records, providing statistical information to isolate these areas and recommending new procedures to prevent deviations or undesirable accounting trends.

• Receives, analyzes, and prepares various internal/external financial ledgers, schedules, exhibits and summaries along with any assigned databases utilized for financial reporting. Utilized quantitative and qualitative approaches to develop financial forecast performance.

• Ensure details of financial transactions are recorded in journals, ledgers, and automated system by others. Adhere to unit and project activities under prescribed schedule.

• Prepares assigned budgetary transactions (i.e., payroll, accounts receivable, forecasts) on a daily basis.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration

Experience: Two (2) years of accounting related experience using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Salary Range: $59,000 - $60,000, Commensurate with education and experience
