Staff Accountant, General Accounting Office - Office of the Chief Finance Office - Georgetown University
The General Accounting Office (GAO), within Georgetown's Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), is responsible for the integrity of financial records and systems. The GAO ensures that the transactions entered into the University's General Ledger adhere to both the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the accounting policies of the University. The GAO promotes the efficient use and stewardship of University resources in compliance with laws, regulations, and reporting requirements, utilizing their technical, financial, and analytical expertise in accounting knowledge.
Job Overview
The Staff Accountant assists in various accounting activities, including general ledger review, month-end close activities and special projects. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepare Journal entries
- Reconcile assigned accounts
- Assist with financial reporting
- Ensure compliance with internal controls
- Participate in month end closing
- Suggest process improvements
- Participate in user acceptance training for ERP system updates
- Assist on special projects
Working under tight deadlines, the Staff Account develops an atmosphere of teamwork across the campus community and OCFO leadership. using expert accounting skills and judgment in addition to excellent customer service skills.

Work Interactions
Reporting to the Financial Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant works closely with colleagues in Treasury Operations, Office of Sponsored Projects Financial Operations, Non-Student Receivables, Accounts Payable and various stakeholders across multiple departments to ensure cash receipts/revenue transactions are accurately captured in the accounting system, and relevant internal control policies and guidelines are adhered to.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree - preference for accounting or finance
- At least 3 to 5 years in relevant, progressive experience in a financial accounting role
- General understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and knowledge of accounting standards related to not-for-profits' laws and regulations.
- A strong background in account reconciliation and general ledger review
- Strong accounting skills and attention to detail
- Strong technical skills in the use of financial accounting and reporting software, as well as MS Excel and Word
- Strong organizational ability, including management of multiple demands
- Strong time management skills, with attention to detail and the abilities to prioritize work and to multi-task to meet deadlines
- General understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and knowledge of accounting standards related to not-for-profits' laws and regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to positively interact with internal and external contacts at all levels
- Ability to run and utilize financial system reports for financial management purposes
