Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and its subsidiaries. They will participate in senior leadership team oversight of the company. Responsibilities include assisting management with important financial decisions, preparing and monitoring company’s financial statements and reports, supervising employees, and understanding the financials of the company to meet legal requirements and keep the financial state of the organization in good standing, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, including non-profit accounting, regulatory pronouncements, and internal policies and controls. The position supervises staff functions responsible for payroll, job cost, inventory, fixed assets, accounts payable and accounts receivable, cash flow analysis and business line financial analysis.
Responsibilities
Operations Leadership
- Provide supervision and leadership that ensures timely and accurate preparation of financial information.
- Manage business line reporting and analysis.
- Oversee cash management process including monitoring cash position, banking activity, investment activity, debt management and reconciliations.
- Maintain accounting policies and procedures.
- Develop and monitor sound internal controls.
- Administer and maintain the general ledger system and reporting package:
- Prepare and review journal entries
- Ensure monthly reconciliation and analysis of general ledger accounts
- Maintain accuracy of subsidiary data systems
- Manage monthly and quarterly financial management reports and analysis including ad hoc reports.
- Coordinate the annual financial audit process including annual 990 tax filings, SEFA, financial statements and supporting schedules and respond to audit inquiries.
- Perform federal grant accounting functions, review input for activity reports, and working with staff to ensure contract compliance and proper revenue recognition.
- Help develop the annual budget and mid-year re-forecasts and coordinate development and analysis of department budgets.
- Proactively work with department managers on annual and monthly budget and forecast related questions.
- Balance financial growth through applicable business line analysis.
- Oversee payroll accounting and related controls, in cooperation with Human Resources Department.
- Oversee administration of accounting systems.
- Prepare and manage accounting department budget.
- Implement appropriate internal controls and high ethical standards regarding protection of organizational assets and dissemination of financial information.
- Assist management in completing key financial objectives and goals.
Team Development:
- Set expectations for staff.
- Select and on-board team members.
- Provide regular coaching and feedback.
- Annually appraise performance and use improvement plans if needed.
- Identify training needs and ensure solutions are provided.
Industry Standards & Compliance:
- Stay up to date with current accounting requirements.
Required Qualifications
Education, credentials, and experience:
- 5+ years progressive accounting/auditing experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAPPS
- Strong technology skills including proficiency in in Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent computer and spreadsheet skills
- Budget and forecasting analytical experience
- General ledger systems experience – Sage Intact or other medium to large general ledger packages
- Employee and project management experience

Preferred Qualifications
Education, credentials, and experience:
- CPA/CMA
- 3 years supervisory/leadership experience
- Accounting experience in real estate, construction, banking and/or nonprofit lending
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Knowledge of non-profit reporting
Physical requirements and work environment
- Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
Hours of work and required travel
- Eligible for hybrid work arrangement, some hours required in-office, opportunity for at home/off-site environment.
- 40-hours per week, flexible workday
COMPENSATION
$110,000 to 130,000 annually dependent on qualifications and experience. Exempt, salaried position with excellent benefit package.
