Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Controller, the Accountant is responsible for performing various general accounting functions, including preparing various financial reports, analyzing and reconciling accounts, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, preparing payroll and payroll reports, and tracking fixed assets. This position requires frequent interaction with others, tact, diplomacy, and excellent problem-solving abilities.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the month-end closing process, ensuring transactions are correctly posted.
Prepares various financial reports, reconciliations, worksheets, and schedules.
Assists in the preparation and management of the budget.
Prepares payroll for all City personnel, ensuring all employees are paid accurately.
Prepares quarterly and annual payroll reports.
Analyzes and reconciles various general ledger accounts.
Identifies, tracks, and reconciles fixed assets monthly.
Reconciles bank statements.
Performs internal audits.
Prepares and processes journal entries.
Prepares various audit schedules and works with city City’s external auditors.
Assists with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures.
Investigates accounting-related inquiries.
Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to demonstrate good customer relations practices.
High level of problem-solving skills.
Proficient knowledge of office procedures, equipment, and financial system software.
Ability to communicate clearly and prepare correspondence, reports, etc., utilizing proper business English.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to establish work priorities and complete tasks within a specified time frame.
Ability to follow all City safety rules and operating procedures at all times.

Preferences:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
CPA or CGFO certification.
Municipal government experience.
Experience working with Tyler Technologies ERP Pro 9 software.
Minimum Qualifications:
College degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Two (2) to five (5) years experience as an accountant.
Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Combination of education and pertinent experience that would enable applicant to preform the functions of the job.
